Ask A Kid

This month’s problem comes from Rachel in Ohio:

I’m in 7th grade and have two moms. My science teacher assigned making pedigrees of our families (this has to do with genetics). I don’t know what to put because I only have one biological parent. Has this happened to anyone else?

What is your first name, state, and email address? (We'll only post your first name and state with your message, and we won't share your email address with others.)

Here are some thoughts from Rainbow Rumpus friends.

I’ve never had that assignment, but maybe it’s ’cause I’m in 6th grade. You could just do it about your biological mom. Maybe you could say you can’t do it and not have to do it at all!! (kidding) You could ask for a different kind of assignment instead. If it was a teacher I trusted I might talk to the teacher, but if it was one of those scary teachers I wouldn’t.

It’s a stupid assignment because lots of kids are adopted or have families like yours. I think you should tell the teacher and the principal that there shouldn’t be assignments like that. You could tell the teacher about your family.
