Interviews
Did you know that there are more than nine million kids in the United States who have lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender parents? We got to talk to some of them at the Rainbow Families Conference in Minnesota in April 2008, as well as to a few kids with heterosexual parents who were also at the conference.
I live with my two moms and Charlie, our chocolate lab. Sometimes we call him Chuck. He climbs up in my fort. He doesn’t know his own strength, and he bites and jumps.
My favorite food is candy! I love sugar babies. My favorite things to do are to stay up late, eat candy, and play. My favorite music is rock ’n’ roll, and my favorite TV show is Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel. [I got a pen at the Rainbow Families conference.] It’s really awesome. My mom thought it was a thermometer and said, “Stick it in your mouth.”
Alana, Age 6 and a half, Minnesota
My favorite food is corn. I live with my mom, Mom, Angel, and Teddy [our dog]. I like to play with my friend Shane. He lives on our block. My favorite song is “Stop in the Name of Love.” My favorite movie is The Cat in the Hat. I’ve been reading Barbie books. I want to say to other kids, “Don’t laugh—come onto Rainbow Rumpus!”
My favorite food is pizza. I have one small dog and one big dog. I live with my mom, Beth, my dad, Pete, my sister, Carly, and my brother, Leo. My favorite thing to do is play on the computer. I’m reading a bone book.

My favorite types of music are hip hop and pop. I like Hannah Montana and High School Musical. My favorite actor is Vanessa Hutchins. I like Disney Channel movies. I’m reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
I live with my moms and my dad. I have a brother, Antwan, and a sister, Kennoa, and one more brother, DeAndre. I like to eat sushi. We buy it at Byerly’s. I have one cat, three dogs, and, like, five fish. I like to play hockey and watch hockey. The Wild are in the playoffs right now. I’m good at marbles too. I guess rock is my favorite type of music. My favorite movie is Miracle. I’m reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Da’Jon, Age 10, Minnesota
My favorite food is pizza. I have a dog named Abby. She does a lot of silly stuff. She’ll nudge you when you’re asleep. I live with my moms and my sister, Tajah, who’s ten. I like to play video games and read comics. I want to see the movie I Am Legend about the last man on earth.
I live with Pam and Alison. Also my brothers and sisters. Are we counting foster brothers and sisters too? OK. Jordan, age 9, Jessica, age 8, Jasmine, age 6, Greg, age 17, Elijah, age 8, Sam, age 13, Devon, age 8, and Allen, who I think is 16. Also there’s my grown-up brothers and sisters: Linsey, who’s 24, Josh, who’s 28, and Jake, who’s 20ish.
I have two birds, cockatiels, and one dog, a Doberman pinscher. I like to eat pizza, bike, swim, play baseball, and go to school. My favorite kind of music is rock. I’d have to say that E.T. is my favorite movie. I’m reading The School Story by Andrew Clemens.

I live with my mom and my sister. My favorite food is pasta, especially spaghetti. We have two dogs and one fish. Their names are Buddy and Lucky. One is a shih tzu, and one is a cockapoo. My favorite thing to do is play soccer. I’m on the West Side team. I like pop music. My favorite movie is Pirates of the Caribbean. I’m reading a book called First Test.
Quintin, Age 12, Minnesota
I have two moms, Laura and Linda, and a brother named Corbin. He’s 10. I would have to say my favorite food is steak. I like to play hockey, baseball, and video games—especially Guitar Hero. I sometimes like to do math at school. I like rock music, and I kinda like rap. I like Chris Brown—I think the song is “No Air.” My favorite movie is Benchwarmers. I’m reading this book about a kid who really likes money, and he writes comic books, and ends up becoming friends with his enemy, who helps sell them. It’s part of a series. I forget the name, but it’s lots of different stories about kids and school.
Celeste, Age 12, Minnesota
I live with my mom Jamie, my mom Ruby, my sister Inez, and my sister Christina. My favorite food is spaghetti. I have a dog, Bella, and two turtles, Houdini and Despierto. My favorite things to do are to play soccer and do art. Hip hop is my favorite kind of music. I don’t watch a lot of TV. I’ve been reading Grimoire. It’s good. It’s about a boy who is stuck in a book and his friend Betsy. They travel places and solve puzzles.
