Book Review: Flying Free by Jennifer C. Gregg

by Hannah Crawford

Imagine you are a firefly. You make friends with the moths and mosquitoes. You never have to be scared of the dark because you have your own nightlight wherever you go. You fly around in the flower gardens, completely free. Then, suddenly, you are captured!

This is what happens to Firefly in Flying Free. He is caught and put in a glass jar by Violet, who is five years old. She wants to be friends and use him for a nightlight. But Firefly misses his old life. Can he think of a way to escape?

Besides Firefly and Violet, you will also meet Violet’s two moms, Mama Red and Mommy Blue. (That’s a lot of color names!) They help Violet take care of Firefly at first. In the end, though, they help Violet do the right thing with Firefly.

You can have fun with the colorful, cartoon-like pictures in this book, too. See if you can spot the snoozing little mouse!

For kids aged 2-6, Flying Free is published by Booksurge, LLC. The pictures are by Janna Richards.
