Book Review: My Two Super Dads by Bronny and Muntsa

by Hannah Crawford

The many-hair-styled narrator of this story is the daughter of two dads. Clearly excited to be sharing her life, she describes her family and the many normal yet special activities they do together. From cooking cheese soufflé, to shopping with her Nanny, to picnicking on the beach, she and her family have a ton of fun.

The child-like rhymes that tell the story contribute to the feeling that we are being spoken to directly by the young narrator. The narrator is never named, which may make it easier for kids to see themselves in her. New readers will be able to read this book with a little help; they’ll also learn some new words (and so did I—“babyccino” is frothy milk in an espresso-sized cup that can apparently be ordered for kids at coffee shops).

The whimsical illustrations complement the words on the page—and always add something extra as well. For example, the young narrator tells us:

My two dads love me so much They tuck me into bed every night With a story and kiss on my head And a big bear hug so I sleep tight

The picture on the opposite page shows the girl in bed with her two dads, who clearly started reading her a story but then both fell asleep. The girl remains awake, eyes wide, reading The Greatest Adventure. Young readers will be glad to go on that adventure with her.

My Two Super Dads can be purchased online from Bronny and Muntsa, as a book (and as an e-book, if you don’t feel like paying for shipping from Australia).
