Book Review: Uncle Bobby’s Wedding by Sarah S. Brannen

Reviewed by Breanna from Nebraska

Uncle Bobby’s Wedding is a picture book about a girl guinea pig named Chloe who spends lots of time with her uncle Bobby, and they love doing things together. Then Chloe finds out that her uncle is going to get married to Jamie. She thinks that since her uncle is going to get married, he is going to forget all about her and not want to do stuff anymore. Her mother suggests that she go and talk to her uncle about her situation. He tells her that he’s happy, that he wants to start his own family too, and that he wants his kids to be just like her someday. So that had her thinking a little bit more.

As the days go by Chloe and her uncle Bobby and Jamie do stuff together just like a family. She started noticing that as they all get together, she starts liking Jamie a lot more than she thought she would. One night  her uncle and Jamie ask Chloe if she would like to be in the wedding as their flower girl. She said that she would love to do it, but she had to ask them what kind of cake they were going to have at the wedding. They told her that she gets to decide that for them.

So the day of the wedding, of course, they were having some difficulties. Her uncle could not find the rings, and the Jamie could not tie his bow, but sure enough she came to the rescue. Just as the wedding was going, she walked down the aisle as the flower girl and watched her uncles get married. Later that night there was dancing, and she grabbed both of her uncles’ hands, and the three of them started dancing. She told them both that “this was the best wedding ever, and I planned it all.” So they all continued to dance until the sun rose the next day.

I would gladly recommend this book to young children so that they too can understand what it is like to have people of the same gender living together. They need to understand that life just doesn’t always have to go with having one mom instead of two or two dads instead of one. People have their right to speak and they can live the way they want. They have the freedom of speech to do what they want. So your life is different then your friend’s life. That doesn’t make you different; that just means that there are more people in your life who love you. Don’t let people tease you because your family is different from theirs.
