Help Bring the Rumpus to a Pride Near You and Share Your Summer Memories with Us
by Laura Matanah
What are your best summer memories? Do you have traditions, or is each summer a new adventure?
My family’s summers have a fairly predictable—and pleasant—routine. We always go to the lakes to swim and make sure we take advantage of the ice cream months. We take Abby, our chocolate lab, to the dog park regularly. We go to our family cabin. This year, for the second year in a row, the kids will do a kayak camp with their cousins. Tajah goes to Camp Icaghowan, run by the YMCA, and this year one of her cousins will join her. For many years we went to Rainbow Families camp as well, and this year we’ll happily be doing it again, along with some of our closest family friends. We usually get to see my mother, either by having her visit or by traveling to Ohio.
Summer is a busy time for Rainbow Rumpus, as we travel to Pride celebrations around the Upper Midwest. It’s a treat to see so many of you at these events, and we always love it when you come to say hi. Pride celebrations are one of the main ways people find out about our website and become involved as readers and writers. I hope you’ll consider joining us to volunteer at a Pride event where you live. We’ve had folks from California to Canada bring our materials to their local Pride events. Please send me an email at lauramatanah at rainbowrumpus dot org if you can help.
You can keep tabs on where we are by joining our Facebook group. The group is also a great place to share your own summer traditions. I hope to hear from you soon on Facebook or via email! In the meantime, have a wonderful summer with your family.
