Grown-Ups

Oh, the Changes!

by Tatum Fjerstad

As you can see, there are a lot of changes going down at Rainbow Rumpus, and the author of this entry is no exception.

Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Tatum Fjerstad, a 26-year-old journalism graduate with a minor in theatre. I live in River Falls, Wisconsin, with my boyfriend and our dog and cat on a corn and soybean farm that my boyfriend’s father owns. While my significant other tends to the soil, I work at a local elementary school with third and fifth graders as a teacher’s aid.

As you’ve probably noticed, my education does not align with my current career choice. But when I put the two together, they greatly inform my new role as section editor for grown-ups and kids at Rainbow Rumpus. I’ve been working with kids since I was a kid myself, in all kind of capacities: camps, day cares, babysitting, substituting at school districts, after school programs. My journalism career exploded in college and shortly thereafter. I’ve worked for 10 different media organizations as everything from an intern to an editor in the Twin Cities, Rochester, New York City, and London.

While I’ve been with Rainbow Rumpus since August, easing my way in and learning as the months went on, the January issue was my first solo project as an editor. I’m looking forward to future issues, and I’m most excited to get to know you, the reader. If you loved, hated, didn’t understand, or wanted more from any story that was published from January on, please don’t hesitate to contact me. If you have a story you think should be heard or if you want to write a story yourself, please e-mail me using our contact form.
